Cougars Shutout Bruins, 34-0
Game
Article The Cougars traveled to Blacksburg Friday night in what was expected to be a tightly contested game. That wasn't the case, however, as the Cougars were able to attack the Bruins in all facets of the game and take home a 34-0 win. Bang, bang, bang.
That was how quickly it seemed to happen Friday night in Blacksburg.
Both teams struggled at the start of the game, exchanging punts, but then
things started to turn around. The Cougars scored on a 55 yard pass
from Chad Perry to Zach Akers with just over three minutes left in the
first quarter. After Akers hit the PAT, he caught the Bruins
sleeping with an onside kick which the Cougars were able to recover.
Roughly a minute later, Randall Cobbs took the ball in from 19 yards out
to give Pulaski a 13-0 lead. Akers missed the PAT on that attempt,
but made up for when he sent the ball just over the heads of the Bruins
front line men, giving the Cougars the chance to recover yet another
kickoff. With just 22 seconds left in the first quarter, Akers
caught yet another pass from Perry, this one for 15 yards and another
Pulaski County touchdown. Cody Long ran in the two point conversion
to give the Cougars a 21-0 lead. That was (as I remember it
from Dan talking on the way home) either a ten or 14 play stretch in which
Pulaski County scored three touchdowns, kicked an extra point, ran in a
two point conversion, recovered an onside kick and an "pooch"
kick....and never let the Bruins take a snap on offense. Last time I
checked......if the other team don't get the ball that's a pretty good
thing. Pulaski scored again in the
first half when Jamail Payne took the ball around the right side on a
sweep, and then Chad Perry added the icing on the cake later in the third
quarter when he took the pigskin into the endzone from 12 yards out. Pulaski Counties defense
held what most considered to be a front runner for River Ridge District
Player of the Year in check for most of the night. The Bruins
running game was contained up the middle and on the ends, and most of the
time as the runners got the ball there would be a Cougar there to greet
them. Blacksburg's quarterback was sacked enough times that he ended
the night with negative 37 yards rushing. Only one Bruins back
reached 40 yards rushing, and the team as a whole was held to just 12
yards rushing. Now that's a pretty good
story to write. The Cougars will gear up
one more time for the 2010 season, as they play host to the Salem
Spartans. Be sure to check back later in the week for a pregame
article on this matchup. GO COUGARS!!!
